I decided to write this post as I was carefully, and artfully, arranging our beloved water supply for refill. One of the most important things you will need in the event of any disaster is water but we often run into a lot more questions than answers regarding how we go about stockpiling said water.
Let’s face it, most of us already have trouble drinking our recommended gallon of water per day so figuring out how much we may need in the event of an emergency is not really on the top of our list.
Knowing all of this, and struggling with this myself, I figured I would share my life/disaster prep hack for water. My situation is much different than most so it may help some of you and may not help others. I hope that it will, at the least, help get the ball rolling for you!
Let’s break down the facts.
Fact Numero Uno: You will need at least 1 gallon of water/person/day
Now let me tell you what they don’t always say. This includes cleaning, cooking, washing dishes, sanitation, drinking, etc. Yep, that’s right, 1 gallon. Have you ever done that? Hell NO!
Fact Number 2: You can't store drinking water in any old thing. There are specific containers for that.
You will be ingesting this water so it is super important that you do not store water in something that will make you sick, right? Nobody wants to have the runs or be throwing up in the middle of a disaster… talk about a crappy day (<— Get it)!
Fact Number 3: Water isn't preserved forever.
Now everyone will tell you something a little different but my personal motto is “use it within 12 months.” I like to keep water no longer than 1 year at a time but, seriously, thats just my preference.
Fact Number 4: Water needs to be stored in a cool and dry place.
Yep, keep it some where it isn’t going to go through all the extreme temperatures. Plastic leeches into water (plastic absorbs chemicals too) y’all. Now real talk, if in the event of an emergency, I come across some plastic leeched water and I’m dehydrated do you think I am going to turn that down? Nope, living sounds pretty good to me.
How I Handle This Craziness
Seeing as how we move frequently and never really know where we will end up, stockpiling a bunch of water to move around with us is not really ideal. We decided to think about it a little bit differently. Our life/ disaster prep hack is….
A Water Delivery Service!
Here is why this works for us:
- We order what we want plus the extra bottles to hold us over in the event of an emergency
- You only replace, reorder, and are charged for what you use
- We can make sure the water remains the freshest by rotating our stock from oldest to new
- Finally, when it’s time to leave, the company will take it all back for us or we can skip the rest of the deliveries to use up the remaining bottles
This is a great alternative if you move often or live in a small space. It has saved us a lot of extra time and energy; which I unfortunately don’t always have extra of. In all honesty, I can lack a bit of patience and sometimes I just need a quick fix!
We supplement with bottled or boxed water for our go-bags and car kits. We have kiddos so that water gets used real quick. They see it, and they want it, so we don’t have to worry about rotating that too much. We also have a few other things we keep in mind but this is our biggest lifesaver.
I would love to hear how you store your water and/or what life hack you may use to fit your lifestyle. Drop a line down below!
Until Next Time,
